Garden Poll

We are thinking of planting a garden this year. It's my first since I was a kid, (Sam grew up on a farm.) so I'm polling to see what you like to plant in your garden.
This is my current wish list which has already reached an unrealistic level:
corn, zucchini, tomato, red pepper, potato, onion, carrot, butternut squash, watermelon

You named all of our favorites, but we also plant peas and beans. This year I am going to try lettuce for the first time. We also are starting our peppers and tomatoes indoors from seed this year - another first.

Good luck!

Broccoli! Lasted all summer and into the fall last year and the store bought stuff doesn't compare to it. The boys especially loved it.

Well, unfortunately I don't have room for a garden, but I would plant several blueberry bushes. :) My grandparents had some and I would pick gallons every year growing up. How well would they grow in the Utah weather?

If I was limited on space, our very faves would be potatoes, onions (red, yellow, white and green), tomatoes, carrots, and bell peppers. Those are the ones we most love...everything else is a bonus. I love to plant cilantro and jalapenos because we eat homemade salsa all the time when the tomatoes are ripe. It's also fun to have some of the fresh herbs that we cook with a lot...basil and sage are probably the ones we use the most.

We are limited because it is never very warm here so tomatoes are out (though they would be a favorite otherwise). Besides those listed by others, I'd suggest rhubarb (a perennial!), strawberries, and zucchini. I agree with potatoes - they were so much fun - we bought a bag of colorful (red, blue, yellow) organic ones at the farmer's market last fall, cut them up, let them dry and put the potatoes in the ground. Sure enough, by February the plants had all come up. It may work different in a more seasonal climate.

The garden has been such a wonderful thing for Malcolm and I do to outside together - he loves anything to do with it (except eating the harvest, sigh). He weeds, prunes, digs, plants, mulches. Little gardening gloves (target) and a tot-sized wheel barrow (garage sale) make it all the more fun.

peas (only because the kids pick and eat them right out of the garden), tomatoes, potatoes, cilantro, serrano chillis, beets, cucumbers, blueberries, onions, and basil. Those are our favorites and what we hope to get into our yard this year.

Tomatoes. I will have limited space due to a planned move in the middle of the summer and I plan to plant my 4 big pots full of tomatoes! Little ones that I can pick and eat, and some big ones that I can pick and eat! Maybe a zucchini but I can buy them relatively cheaply at the farmer's market, so maybe I'll be a little more creative!
